gettin crafty!

old boring filing cabinet gets a spunky make over:

1) Clean and sand if any rust or irregular surfaces

2) Remove drawer pulls w/ screwdriver

3) Give it a good coat of white primer, let dry 24 hours

4) With even strokes coat 2x with wood/metal spraypaint

5) After all surfaces have dried sufficiently screw new hardware (I picked up mine for $1.99 each)

Filing cabinet: Free from family member

Can of primer: $1.99

Can of spraypaint: $6.99

Hardware: $1.99 x 2

For about $13 got a totally new filing cabinet to brighten up the office!

Just went and saw Art in the Streets at MOCA's Geffen in Little Tokyo. I say things are "the best ever" kinda a lot, but this warrants the title of best exhibit I've ever seen. It's a super comprehensive exhibit of the history of graffiti and street art with some of the biggest names like Keith Haring, Banksy, Shepard Fairey to name a few, with photography and film from the likes of Spike Jonze & Ed Templeton. It was so, so so amazing I'm pretty sure I could've camped out there for a few days and still not have digested all there was to offer.
Get your bum bum to see in person before August 8, I'm not sure there will be anything close to this for a long time.

Hello Texas! Time to hit the road again for a work event in Dallas this weekend. Here's what comes up when you google Dallas:

hmmmm. It'll be interesting for a vegetarian artist to say the least.

But we will be at the new stadium which should be pretty awesome to see the renovation that cost more than some small countries GDP. The 600 ton, 25000 square foot HD screen should be a sight in itself.

Love, love, loving the work of German duo Herakut. The fine realism rendered in the faces and characters set against the graphic and graffiti loose drippy backgrounds is everything I love about painting. Tight and controlled meets chaos and spontaneity.

BRIGHT / BBB Berlin, Jan 2011

My first time at the Bread & Butter / Bright tradeshows in Berlin, yeah! I have heard about this show as long as I've been in the industry and it truly lived up to the hype. BBB was in the Tempelhof Airport, once one of the largest buildings in the world and the former location of the Allies airlift operation to deliver food and supplies to West Berlin during WWII. (So cool) The show spanned 7 hangers and was the best of the best brands in premium denim, footwear and apparel. Then on over to Bright on day 2 for skate and streetwear at the former Stasi headquarter building. (I repeat, so cool) The feeling of this show was sooo much different than the behemoth that was BBB, so much more social and intimate. The brands weren't closed off to the public either, sooo nice to not have to take photos in stealth mode. Here are a few highlights below, I left out the boring worky photos cuz I thought 435 photos of shoes might get a little old...

Probably not the best for the ole respiratory system but my painting space just doesn't have enough damn light! Yay to Miss Taryn and Shelby and their relaunched site, new logo and all!! I had the greatest honor to have Taryn shoot my wedding and couldn't be happier when she and Shelby asked me to revamp their logo for Joielala Photographie. They wanted something boutique'y and hand-drawn inspired, but not too girly since they are expanding their clientele. They chose the color scheme and I think it all came together super well! I love my talented friends!!

My darling friend Viv just launched her own cosmetic line, VLUX cosmetics!! I am so excited because I remember when she first started talking about it, and now it's a reality! It's been cool to see the process, from her picking a name to flying to Asia to finalizing the color palettes... I give a lot of props to anyone who can have a vision and make it happen! So I'm off on a market trip for work tomorrow, hitting Rome, Copenhagen and Berlin all in 8 days! I'm so excited because I've never been to Italy before and I'm sooo looking forward to the architecture, food and SHOPPING. I'm sure there will be no lack of inspiration to bring back for FA11 season...and perhaps a few Italian designer additions to my personal wardrobe :-)

So I meant to document the various stages of this project, but got carried away before I could bust the camera out. I'm about 3/4 of the way through, and have mixed feelings about the result. Originally our intentions were to take Taryn's photos as a starting point and have it show through in my final painting...unfortunately our first attempt pretty much obliterated any sign that there actually was any photography underneath all of this. Oh well live and learn! I'm excited for collab #2, and I think for my first stab back at painting (in like a year) I'm relatively pleased. Not my usual palette, either, which is kinda exciting....
Hope to finish up in the next few days...post then!

embarked on a new project today, collab-style and thoroughly rough around the edges, but the potential is totally there. to get the creative juices flowing I turned to some of my "comfort artists"...
audrey kawasaki - raw, beautiful, ethereal
egon schiele - edgy, provocative and controversial

i love the way the figures float on the page as the focal point and are emphasized by heavy outlines...also totally didn't mean this but they both are almost uncomfortably erotic (as I was image searching there were a few I had to *ahem* leave out)
ahh gotta love controversy!
